I painted this view of Boat Harbour on Tasmania’s northwest coast from the lookout halfway down the hill as you drive into the bay. It’s a view that has always stood out to me - as you descend the road, the bright turquoise water suddenly opens up against the rocky coastline and the wide expanse of Bass Strait.
Boat Harbour sits within Rocky Cape National Park and is known for its bright turquoise water, white sand and the green farmland that surrounds the coastline. I’ve visited many times over the years on day trips and camping trips, and it’s a place that always feels peaceful and welcoming to me.
My most recent visit was for breakfast with good company, which reminded me again how striking the harbour is.
I used my own photographs from that viewpoint as reference while painting, focusing on the colour of the water and the feeling of looking out over the bay from above.
This piece reflects both the natural beauty of Boat Harbour and the personal memories I’ve made there over the years.
